Langauge Guide - Plants

I'll be posting langauge guides for those of you interested in learning some Hungarian natural history terms.  Some of these lists will deal with general terms and others will be more technical.  I am not a botanist, so this plant guide will be fairly simple.

I'll keep updating these guides with additional terms and corrections. I look forward to your suggestions, corrections, and alternate terms.

  1. rootlets: "hajszálgyökerek" if hair roots.

bulb: "rügy". "izzó" is lightbulb :-)

    stigma: "bibe"

    stylus: "bibeszál"

seed: "mag" in general, "vetőmag" is the agricultural term for sowing seed.

nut: "csonthéjas". "dió" is walnut only.

fruit: "termés". "gyümölcs" works too, but primarily for edible fruits.

Bramble: I think you mean "folyondár", anything with vines.

    Rushes: "szittyófélék", "gyékény" is Typha.

Reeds: "nádfélék"? Poales is "pázsitfűfélék", and I'm not a big fan of polyphyletism. "nádas" is the swampy lakeside habitat with lots of tall reed.

Clubmoss: "korpafűalakúak"? Way out of my league here...

Horsetail: "zsurló". "lófarok" is literally horse tail, or the hairstyle.

Wild cherry: "vadmeggy". Sour cherry is "meggy".

  2. Szocske, excellent! Just the kind of tutoring I had hoped this blog would generate. Thanks!

    I'll update the blog shortly.

Brambles I was thinking raspberry, blackberry, etc. All thorned bushlike plants.

But, I can use vines too.
